Our Mission

At Fostering Hope for Second Chances, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported—no matter how their story begins. Our mission is to walk alongside families and caregivers during some of life’s most difficult transitions by providing essential items like clothing, hygiene supplies, diapers, and comfort items to children of all ages in foster care, kinship care, adoption, or crisis.

But more than just meeting physical needs, we aim to deliver hope, restore dignity, and remind every child that second chances are possible—and they matter. Because while we can’t always change the past, we can help shape a softer landing and a stronger future.

Kay Oberender

Hi, I’m Kay Oberender—a mom of two, grandma of three, and a longtime member of the Ankeny community. I’m thrilled to join Fostering Hope for Second Chances and return to meaningful work supporting children and families.

My career began in special education, teaching children with severe emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physical challenges. Later, I taught in DMACC’s Developmental Disabilities Program, preparing paraprofessionals to work with children who have special needs. While raising my kids, I earned a Master’s in Guidance and Counseling at Iowa State and became an elementary school counselor in the Johnston Community Schools—my second home for many years. I eventually transitioned into home intervention work with at-risk K–8 students and their families, which gave me a deeper appreciation for the challenges many children face.

I was also trained by a private adoption agency to conduct home studies, and I opened my home to a young mother whose daughters had been removed by DHS. I provided her with a safe place and supervised visits with her girls. That experience—along with working alongside professionals from many disciplines—showed me the power of collaboration. I believe it will be essential to our work at Fostering Hope.

I’ve witnessed many heartbreaking moments—kids leaving home with only a grocery bag or little boys waiting all day on Christmas for a mom who never came. Those memories still sit with me and continue to drive my passion for helping.

I believe in second chances, and I know we can help make them happen. I’m honored to be part of this dedicated, passionate team and look forward to helping create a safer, brighter future for foster children and the families who care for them.
